Others catch the odd cold; you go down several times a year — a bit of wind, a change in the weather, one late night, and it's a scratchy throat, sneezing and a blocked nose. And once you're ill it drags: cough and runny nose on and off for weeks, then you're barely better before the next one. Many put it down to "bad luck" or "just weak immunity" and reach for medicine to suppress each round. TCM's focus for recurring colds isn't "how to get over this one" but "why you catch them so easily and clear them so slowly" — usually weak upright qi and an unsecured defensive (wei) qi, often lung-and-spleen qi deficiency or qi-and-yin deficiency, sometimes with lingering internal heat. Steadying that vulnerable baseline is the key to fewer colds.
Orang lain sekali-sekala selesema; anda pula beberapa kali setahun — sedikit angin, tukar cuaca, satu malam berjaga, terus sakit tekak, bersin dan hidung tersumbat.
Recurring Colds Aren't "Bad Luck" — It's Unsecured Defensive Qi
Selesema Berulang Bukan "Nasib" — Ia Qi Pertahanan Tak Kukuh
A TCM saying goes: "when upright qi is held within, evils cannot invade" — if the body's own defences (upright and defensive qi) are enough, outside pathogens don't get in easily. Defensive (wei) qi is like a guard at the surface of the skin, warding off wind-cold and regulating the pores. Strong guard, and a draught or a passing virus is shrugged off; a weakened guard (unsecured wei qi), and the slightest thing gets through — and once ill, too little qi means slow recovery, dragging into a lingering cough or endless runny nose, sometimes one round piling onto the next before it fully clears. So for people who catch colds again and again, the real thing to address is "why the defences are weak," not just suppressing symptoms each time.
Fewer colds don't come from "stronger medicine each time" but from steadying the body that keeps getting sick — secure the defensive qi, and pathogens invade less easily.
The Common Patterns Behind an Easy-to-Catch Constitution
Corak Biasa di Sebalik Badan Mudah Selesema
See which fits you (or a child or elder) best — many are a mix, and a proper diagnosis still needs a practitioner.
Lihat yang mana paling sesuai (anda, anak atau warga tua) — ramai jenis campuran, diagnosis sebenar tetap perlukan pengamal.
Easily tired, a weak voice, sweating on slight exertion, a pale face, so-so appetite, loose stools — and down with the first draught. The "supply line" for the defences is short. The direction is to strengthen the spleen, boost the lung and secure the surface (the classic Yu Ping Feng approach).
Mudah penat, suara lemah, berpeluh bila bergerak sedikit, muka pucat, selera biasa, najis lembik — dan kena bila terkena angin. Arahnya kuatkan limpa, tambah paru dan kukuhkan permukaan.
Along with tiredness and catching colds, a dry mouth and throat, warm palms and soles, restless sleep, a dry cough that lingers after colds, a red tongue with scant coating. Common with late nights, after illness, or with age. The direction is to boost qi and nourish yin together, not warm-drying tonics alone.
Selain penat dan mudah selesema, mulut dan tekak kering, tapak tangan/kaki panas, tidur tak lena, batuk kering berlarutan selepas selesema. Arahnya tambah qi dan pupuk yin serentak.
Overeating, too much sweet and greasy food, stagnating and turning to heat: bad breath, dry or smelly stools, restless sleep, tonsils that flare easily — internal heat that invites outside bugs. The direction is to clear stagnation and heat and strengthen the spleen first, not pile on tonics. Common in children.
Markedly cold-averse, cold hands and feet, down with any chill, colds with clear runny nose, low energy — common in the older or cold-natured. The direction is to warm the yang, boost qi and secure the surface. This type shouldn't be treated with clearing, bitter-cold cooling teas.
How An Xin TCM Helps Recurring Colds
Bagaimana An Xin TCM Membantu Selesema Berulang
TCM helps recurring colds not with "a stronger cold medicine" but in two stages: in the acute phase it releases the current cold if needed, but the real work is in the well phase — steadying, by your pattern, the body that keeps getting sick. Get it right and improvement shows as fewer colds, a shorter course each time, milder symptoms and fewer complications (less dragging into a lingering cough or sinus flare), with better day-to-day energy.
Matched to the pattern with concentrated herbs (granules): boost qi and secure the surface for lung-spleen deficiency (the Yu Ping Feng approach), qi-and-yin support, clearing stagnation and heat first, or warming for the cold type; a wind-releasing direction during an acute cold. Easy to make, precisely dosed, with child-appropriate doses. Don't self-load on random "tonics" long-term — tonifying the wrong way (warm tonics when there's hidden heat) can make things more inflamed.
Acupuncture on lung, spleen, Dazhui and Zusanli points helps support upright qi and regulate immunity; for the cold-deficient, moxibustion to warm and secure the surface adds to it. Done regularly, it builds the defences in the well phase, not scrambling only once you're ill.
Beyond constitution, the basics matter: enough sleep and no late nights (sleep is the root of building qi); regular meals, easy on cold, sweet, greasy and fried food (especially children, where food-heat invites illness); moderate exercise and sunlight; don't blast the air-con the moment you're hot; adjust clothing with the weather and don't cool down in a draught while sweating; wash hands, and avoid crowded, closed spaces in peak season. With pattern-based care, the defences hold steady.
Selain badan, asasnya penting: tidur cukup tanpa berjaga lewat; makan teratur, kurangkan makanan sejuk, manis, berminyak dan bergoreng (terutama kanak-kanak); senaman sederhana dan cahaya matahari; jangan sejukkan badan berpeluh dalam angin; laraskan pakaian ikut cuaca; cuci tangan dan elak tempat sesak pada musim puncak.
Honestly: TCM tunes the body to "catch fewer, recover faster," not "never catch a cold again." Shifting a constitution takes time and cooperation; don't expect a few doses to make you invincible. Also, don't sit on these as "just another cold" — see a doctor to check: repeated severe infections, a cough that won't clear over weeks, persistent or recurring low fever, unexplained weight loss, frequent blocked nose with pus-like discharge (checking for allergic rhinitis, sinusitis or tonsil foci), or existing anaemia, blood-sugar or immune issues. And with a high fever that won't come down, difficulty or fast breathing, severe chest pain, or marked listlessness (especially in children or the elderly) — seek care immediately, don't wait. TCM care and necessary medical checks never conflict.

Can TCM help with frequent colds?Bolehkah TCM membantu selesema berulang?+
Yes. TCM doesn't treat frequent colds as mere bad luck or something to keep suppressing with medicine, but looks at the underlying weakness of upright qi and unstable defensive qi — commonly lung-spleen qi deficiency, qi-and-yin deficiency, or lingering internal heat and stagnation. The direction is to boost qi and secure the exterior (the classic Yu Ping Feng approach), strengthen the spleen and lung, and steady a constitution that is easily invaded, alongside sleep and diet. The goal is fewer colds, a shorter course each time, milder symptoms and fewer complications. It runs alongside any medical checks and treatment. At An Xin TCM in Melaka, KKM-registered practitioners treat by pattern.
Why do I (or my child) catch colds so easily and take so long to recover?
TCM holds that when upright qi is preserved within, evil cannot invade — if the body's defensive qi is enough, external factors don't easily get in. People who catch colds repeatedly usually have unstable defensive qi and lung-spleen qi deficiency: a little draught, a change in weather, or late nights and fatigue and they go down, then recover slowly and easily drag it into a lingering cough or endless runny nose. Common triggers include too little sleep, stress, cold-raw and sweet-greasy food that harms the spleen, lack of exercise, and a weaker constitution (children, the elderly, postnatal, after long illness). So the point isn't only how to get over this cold, but why you go down so easily and heal so slowly.
How long does it take to build immunity, and what can I start with day-to-day?
Adjusting the constitution is gradual, usually over a course of care rather than a couple of doses that stop colds forever; the practitioner tracks whether the frequency, course and your energy improve step by step. To start at home: get enough sleep and avoid late nights (sleep is the foundation of upright qi), eat regularly without craving cold-raw or sweet-greasy food, exercise moderately and get sunlight, keep warm and don't blast the air-con the moment you feel hot, and wash hands often to cut cross-infection. With pattern-based care these make results steady. One honest note: TCM tunes the constitution so you catch colds less easily and recover faster — not a guarantee you will never catch one again.
When should frequent colds be checked by a doctor first?Bila selesema berulang perlu diperiksa doktor dahulu?+
Most frequent colds come from constitution and lifestyle and can be managed, but see a doctor first if: infections are repeated and severe, a cough won't clear, there is persistent or recurring low fever, unexplained weight loss, or frequent blocked nose with thick discharge (to check for allergic rhinitis, sinusitis or tonsil problems), or you already have anaemia, blood-sugar or immune-related issues. And if there is a high fever that won't come down, difficulty or fast breathing, severe chest pain, or marked listlessness (especially in children and the elderly) — seek care immediately, don't wait. TCM care and necessary medical checks never conflict.
